Mediation is a type of alternative dispute resolution that gives the two disputing parties a third party to help them discuss and revise their points of conflict. The mediator acknowledges the points of which the parties are in agreement upon and builds upon those to create a solution between the two parties. Similarly, arbitration includes a third party that listens to the two disputing parties. However, in arbitration the arbitrator or the third party gives a final decision. In most cases, the decision given is binding. This means that â€Å"it may not be reviewed or overturn by a court except in very limited circumstances† (Repa, n.d.). But some parties have been known to agree to a nonbinding arbitration meaning that the award given can be rejected and the option of demanding a trial can be used. However, there are cases where the mediator can make a decision that is binding if both parties do not agree. In some cases, the mediation can be turned into an arbitration. In the majority of mediation processes, the goal is â€Å"to assist the parties with their negotiation, and empower the parties to make their own decisions† (Negotiation, 2014). The mediator themselves has no real authority over the two parties. Rather than with arbitration, the arbitrator or the panel gives the final closing decision that cannot be revoked. Question: Discuss about the Completeness of Strategic Performance Management. Answer: Introduction The Australian government has introduced various legislations relating to climate change. As a result, companies have incorporated environmental sustainability measures in their Strategic Performance Measurement Systems (SPMS). Ideally, these firms have not been disclosing their SPMS adoption in their annual reports. However, after enacting of the legislations by the government, many organizations have shown their willingness to disclose their SPMS adoption. If the disclosure of SPMS adoption is not linked to rewards systems or compensation plans, then it is just a mechanism to brainwash the shareholders or investors (Aguinis, 2009). This research paper has two sections. Part 1 looks at the profile of two Australian public companies and discusses the criteria that I have chosen in deciding whether those two businesses have adopted a multi-perspective SPMS. Besides, this section examines the SPMS disclosure of those two companies, discusses whether there have been any changes made in SPMS disclosures between 2014 and 2015 concerning the objectives, perspectives, targets and measures set and compares the SPMS disclosures of the two enterprises. Section 2, on the other hand, looks at the performance of the two companies and links their performance to rewards or compensation plans. Ideally, it analyses their financial results, investigates whether they link their SPMS targets or measures with rewards or compensation plans and explains whether the two businesses have strengthened their competitive advantage or not. Company profile and disclosure of SPMS In this analysis, I choose Telstra Corporation Limited, which comes from the telecommunications industry, a non-environmentally sensitive industry, and BHP Billiton Inc, which is in the mining sector, an environmentally sensitive industry (Araz, and Ozkarahan, 2007, pp.585-606). Telstra Corporation Limited is an Australian telecommunications firm which offers communications services. Telstra Corporation Limited is traded on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) with ticker symbol TSL. BHP Billiton Inc, on the other hand, is an Australian multinational company traded on the Australian Stock Exchange with ticker symbol BHP. As of 2015, this business was the largest mining company by market values (Bhagwat, and Sharma, 2007, pp.43-62). It mines products such as iron ore, coal, petroleum, nickel, natural gas, uranium, and copper. Criteria Used in Deciding the Adopt of a Multi-perspective SPMS by the Companies According to Elijido-Ten and Tjan (2014), companies use the balance scorecard approach as a performance measurement system to define their strategies and objectives thus allowing the management to supplement financial measures with a mix of non-financial metrics. Ideally, there are four performance measurement perspectives, which include financial perspective, internal process perspective, customer perspective, and learning and growth perspective (Daley, 2006, pp.120-134). The financial perspective describes whether a company's mission, strategy, vision and objectives have led to its improved economic and fiscal success. Here, the management performs an economic analysis to determine whether the firm is succeeding or failing. The customer perspective looks at what a company does to keep its customers that is its customer relationship. If a corporation has a strong customer relationship, then it is performing well (de Waal, Kourtit, and Nijkamp, 2009, pp.1242-1265). However, if its cu stomer relationship is weak and there are no return customers, then it is failing. The internal business process perspective monitors the internal processes of a business and the internal control system in those processes to determine whether the firm is succeeding or not. Here, the business looks at factors such as the quality of the products, the innovation used by the company and distribution services. A weak internal control system at these processes will indicate that a company is failing, while a strong internal control system would mean a successful business. Elijido-Ten and Tjan (2014) further states that to determine the SPMS disclosures of the firms, one looks at three essential features that is a distinct mission, vision, and strategy statement, relevant and measurable targets (prospective financial statements) and indicators of past and current performance (backward-looking statements). Back looking statements usually communicate a firm's previous sustainability initiatives, performance measures, and targets while forward-looking looks at predicted sustainability goals and objectives that have been recognized by the enterprise (Elijido-Ten, 2011). Finally, strategy statements summarize how the non-financial targets can be linked to the financial goals. The SPMS disclosure of the Two Companies The approach of Telstra focuses on improving customer experience, building new business units and driving client value. Telstra achieves improved customer advocacy by providing their customers with outstanding mobile service in Australia. Their strategy statement indicates that they are committed to maintaining their market share as a network leader (Elijido-Ten, 2013). This is evident because they invested $ 1.1 billion in 2015 in their mobile network and they have considered expanding their 4G mobile. This is the first SPMS disclosure that Telstra Corporation has made in its annual report. Besides, the company has launched a global managed network services as well as a global Infrastructure service. This is evidenced by the fact that they have established a new business unit, Global Enterprise, and Services, which aims at delivering innovation and globalization. Telstra Corporation has disclosed its customer perspective in that in its strategy; the management stated that they were committed to improving the services and experiences of clients and this is evidenced by the fact that they have implemented a Net Promoter System (NPS) program, which seeks feedback from customers and helps them measure their progress. This is the second SPMS adopted by Telstra Corporation (Elijido-Ten and Tjan, 2014). The 2014 annual report of Telstra Corporation contains backward-looking statements, as the past and current data is evident. The strategy BHP Billiton focuses on owning and operating large, cheap and expandable diversifiable assets (Ferreira, and Otley, 2009, pp.263-282). They have managed to achieve this strategy by positioning itself to continue to meet the ever-changing needs of the consumers. Besides, their plan involves ensuring the health and safety of their workers and ensuring that they maintain their ethical and responsible behavior. With this strategy, it is evident that BHP Billiton has adopted SPMS by making sure that they achieve the customer, the financial and learning, and growth perspective. The 2014 annual report of BHP Billiton also contains forward-looking statements that is trends in commodity prices, exchange rates, plans, products demand, forecast, anticipated production, capital costs, operating costs, anticipated projects and so forth. This is evident by the use of words such as anticipate, believes, plan, expects, intend, estimates, aims, projects or similar words. Discussion of Any Changes Made in SPMS Disclosures regarding the Perspectives, Objectives, Measures and Targets Set During the year ended 2015, Telstra Corporation has aimed at maintaining their focus on improving customer advocacy, driving value and building new growth businesses. This means that their SPMS disclosures have not changed. Their goal of ensuring employee involvement, everyone connected and environmental leadership has not changed from 2014 to 2015. BHP Billiton has also not changed on its SPMS disclosure measures in 2015. This is because the management has still embarked on the same sustainability as in 2014 that is putting health and safety first, supporting their communities and being environmentally responsible (Franco-Santos, Kennerley, Micheli, Martinez, Mason, Marr, Gray, and Neely, 2007, pp.784-801). Comparison of the SPMS disclosures of the Two Companies A comparison of BHP Billiton Inc and Telstra Corporation would indicate that BHP Billiton performs forward-looking statements while Telstra has backward-looking statements. Both companies have strategy reports (Kaplan, and Norton, 2007, p.150). BHP Billiton aims at operating huge, low-cost, long-life and expandable diversifiable assets while Telstra Corporation aims at improving the advocacy customers, driving value and building new initiatives. Based on the balanced scorecard, one can analyze the financial performance of BHP Billiton and Telstra Corporation. On the economic perspective, the revenue of Telstra has increased by 20% from 2014 to 2015. Its costs have also increased by 4.6%, which implies that Telstra is not performing well (Need, 2006). The return on investment on Telstra was 18.9% in 2015, which is not a good indicator as it decreased from 20.4% in 2014. The return on equity of Telstra amounted to 30.3% in 2015, which was a decline from 32.3% in 2014. This led to a drop in stock price, thus a small remuneration for its executives. The revenue of BHP Billiton, on the other hand, has decreased by 21%. This means that BHP Billiton is a poor performing company than Telstra Corporation regarding revenue. The annual report of 2015 of BHP Billiton gives a summary of their key performance indicators (KPIs). These KPIs enable them to measure their financial performance and sustainable development. The first KPI of BHP Billiton is total recordable injury frequency (TRIF). During the period, the number of injuries reduced from 4.18 million to 4.1 million. This is a reduction by 2%. This KPI links to the strategy of BHP Billiton in that they have ensured the health and safety of their people. Second, BHP Billiton has involved itself in community investment (Need, 2006). In 2015, their community investment totalled $ 225 million, which comprised of $ 142 million in cash and a contribution of $ 83 million to the BHP Billiton Foundation. This links to their strategy in that they believe in operating an ethical and socially responsible firm. Third, total shareholder return is a capital management KPI of BHP Billiton. In 2015, the companys total shareholder return was -27% because of a decline i n share price. This links to their strategy in that they measure their performance concerning shareholder wealth generation. Lastly, BHP Billiton green gas emissions were 38.3 million which represented a reduction of 6% from 2014. This links to its strategy in that the company aimed at achieving the global challenge of climate change. An Investigation of Whether the Two Companies Link their SPMS Measures with Executive Rewards The Board of Telstra Corporation believes that total shareholder return is an appropriate performance hurdle or measure because it relates executive rewards or compensation plan to its share price performance about its competitors (Elijido-Ten and Tjan, 2014). This is an SPMS measure that Telstra has adopted, and it is, therefore, evident that it links to executive rewards. From the annual report of BHP Billiton, it is clear that the board has not connected their SPMS measures with the executive compensation plan. Telstra has accomplished to enhance its competitive advantage since it has achieved its strategy, an increase in revenue and linked its SPMS measures to rewards despite having a declining ROI, ROE (Elijido-Ten, 2013). BHP Billiton, on the other hand, has failed to strengthen its competitive advantage since it has not been able to link its KPIs to rewards. Conclusion SPMS measures determine a companys financial performance. An analysis on BHP Billiton and Telstra Corporation indicated that Telstra had succeeded in strengthening its competitive advantage as it achieved its strategy that is to improve customer advocacy, to build new businesses and to drive value. Besides, it managed to link SPMS measures to rewards. BHP Billiton, on the other hand, failed to strengthen its competitive advantage, as it did not link its SPMS measures to rewards. Sectoral classification has clubbed the government functions into three sectors, namely, General Services, Social and Community Services and Economic services. In the new structure, a major head is assigned to each function and minor head is assigned to each programme. Each minor head include activities or schemes or organizations as subheads. Economic Classification: Economic classification of the government expenditure signifies the way of the allocation of resources to various economic activities. It is a routine for them, after a fight, one going out, the other staying home, and later they get back to each other. Written by Sharon Olds, â€Å"I Go Back to May 1937† tells a story of a broken relationship between a mother and a father from a child’s preexistent vantage point. Both poems are about conflicts in a family, between a husband and wife, possibly due to lack of love and understanding. Rich tells the story, an everyday fight, with a simplicity in language but hidden within are contradiction as well as a metaphor, whereas Olds uses imagistic language, metaphors and anaphora to describe her parents, how they are unsuitable for each other. In â€Å"Novella,† Rich approaches directly with simple word choices, focusing on a marital argument to illustrate the problem in a marriage. The poem begins: Two people in a room, speaking harshly. O ne gets up, goes out to walk. (That is the man.) The other goes into the next room and washes the dishes, cracking one. (That is the woman.) (1-6). In these first lines, one can see that Rich only uses simple words to establish a situation of a troubled marriage. She shows that the husband and wife take out their aggressions towards one another on the house – the husband leaves the house and the wife breaks a dish. Although the parallel views of husband and wife given at the beginning of the poem seem to say that they are both at fault for the marriage’s problem, Rich portrays the woman as much more of a victim when she says later in the poem: â€Å"She has no blood left in her heart.†(9), as though the husband Hoang 2 is a vampire who has victimized his wife. Contradiction is another eminent element in â€Å"Novella†, appeared in line 10, 12 and 13. After the fight, â€Å"The man comes back to a dark house† (10), revealing the husband’s view about his own house. The house is described as a random house with the use of article â€Å"a† and as an dark abandoned house despite the fact that his wife and children are all inside. To the man, the house is no longer his home that he feels comfortable to return. In front of the house, the husband realizes that â€Å"He has forgotten his key / He rings at his own door† (12-13). The fact that the husband forgets the key shows that he probably does not want to return with his family. As a result, he now has to â€Å"rings at his own door† like a stranger who does not belong to the family. Even though the husband returns home in the last lines of the poem, Rich asserts that the husband and wife are ultimately separate, using the stars as a metaphor: Outside, separate as minds the stars too come alight. (17-18). The stars, as a metaphor, represent the husband and wife after the fight. Outside, like their minds separated to each other, the stars, scattered in the sky, begins to blink one by one. Inside, like the star, the husband and wife live under the same â€Å"sky† but do not really understand each other. In â€Å"I Go Back to May 1937,† one can easily see how Old’s poetic style contrasts with Rich’s prosaic, less imagery one. Throughout most of the first half of Old’s poem, she is intensely descriptive, which also adds to the tone of her poem. â€Å"I see my father strolling out under the ochre sandstone arch, the red tiles glinting like bent plates of blood behind his head† (line 2-5). She sees her father as a confident young man, as sturdy and stubborn as the stone arch he is walking under. People who live in cities and have lost touch with the earth. These people are portrayed in John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath as Californians. Yet, people from the Midwest flocked to California seeking prosperity and opportunity. Their land had been taken by the banks and turned into cotton fields. They were left homeless and desperate. In fact, the world they entered into when they arrived in California was a cold one. The locals excluded the newcomers and forced them to leave. The earth resembles the Garden of Eden, or a ‘paradise.’ He must be in touch with the earth.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Grapes of Wrath has many obvious connections to the romance archetype, and many subtle connections. One of the more obvious connections is the journey. The main characters, the Joads, embark on a journey from Kansas to California. In the 1930’s Kansas was in the ‘Dust Bowl’, a part of the Midwest where the land dried up, causing fierce dust storms that could kill people. California, on the other hand, was the beautiful, fertile valley, where people could pick peaches, become prosperous, and eventually buy a house to settle down. The fact that the Joads traveled from a terrible place to a better place fits the romance archetype. This better place they search for is the connection to the earth that they once had in Kansas. The book, â€Å"Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus† by John Gray, generally, explores the claim that men and women are different and it is this difference that makes relationships fail and/or succeed. Using an allegorical backdrop, he presented his hypothesis by narrating how men originally was from Mars, where, they value success, titles and positions and how women originally was from Venus, where they value relationships, communication and empathy. At a particular point, lives on both planets became meaningless until a Martian glimpsed a Venetian and the Venetians felt loved and cherished, thus, they fitted the gap missing in their lives and opted to live on earth. This story was carefully enhanced as each personality is explored, taking into account their background, their reactions, feelings, expectations as well as coping mechanisms. I can see how positive Gray is, in pursuing his claim, presenting the facts, examples as well as possibilities of the situation. I can also say that most of his concepts are true – that women are indeed very â€Å"emotional† and that men are very â€Å"logical†. On the other hand, this will only be applicable for couples who are willing to make a relationship work. I do not think this will work effectively in a relationship where, let’s say, the man does not understand how a woman think or where a man does not know that women are like â€Å"tides†. I think in the end, women are still going to give – that they will still be â€Å"trapped† in such situation where they have no choice but to give and obliged to understand men. In a way, I don’t like the idea that men fill in the void the women feel when they encounter their down moments. I don’t like the idea that a Venetian is in need of a Martian. Perhaps, I’m just in a rebellious state that I feel that way but I never liked the idea that a woman can’t live without a man in her life. I believe that women are able and are very capable to sustain a living. Such that if a woman is being beaten by her husband, or if a woman is being abused, or if a man validates his vices as a coping mechanism when he is in his cave, the woman has every right to fight back or even leave her husband. She shouldn’t disregard her needs as a woman just because she is waiting for her husband to come out of his cave or have his rubber band pulled back. She shouldn’t let anybody step over her boundaries just because she is naturally, understanding. In the field of human services, the information about men and women will greatly help in dealing with people. It’s hard to separately discuss how acting out, catharsis and repression is related to concepts mentioned in the book so I will be citing possible examples instead. In cases of teenage drug abuse, it is important to trace how it started, or particularly, why it did. Getting these people to talk, be it a man or a woman is never easy. For one, their current coping mechanism may be a result of continuous nurturing of repressed emotions. While time is a big element in these types of situation, using Gray’s concepts teach us to allow them space until they are ready to discuss their issues. Force rarely works in these scenarios, nor is immediate rehabilitation. For youngsters, parents’ participation in this process is very crucial as children may have repressed emotions that need attention. Parents should be educated on â€Å"how to listen† while children will have to be â€Å"advised† on how to â€Å"accept† or â€Å"communicate. † For adults, one’s behavior or treatment greatly matters. Gray’s notes on how to motivate a man or a woman, or encourage them to talk will help in these types of scenarios. In child abuse or rape cases, they say it’s far easier to assign a woman to interview the victims. This is true, because women in general, know how to empathize with the victims as well as understand the situation. Men, normally, try to put on their â€Å"Mr. Fix It Personality† to help a victim feel better – which rarely works and usually pushes the victims into their own comfort zones – choosing not to talk, instead. In dealing with the elderly or senior citizens, it will be very different. The provider has to understand that not only does gender matter here but also the psychosocial stage a person is in. Dealing with senior citizens do not constitute a relational aspect, some may even feel insulted if you try to look at it in that perspective. Gray’s ideas in considering the person’s culture (or background) and understanding the person’s individuality (gender and personality) will help in making such relationship fruitful and successful. Health services may seem very specific and require lesser attention or relational aspect. This is true. In a manner of speaking, health provided is based on the results of a test or exam conducted/surveyed on a specific community. On the other hand, some people may refuse to accept help or decline it outright; thinking that they don’t need it or their pride has been insulted. Thus, it is important for health providers to be relational, helping people understand the benefits of the help being provided so that it can be accepted more freely. Imagine, how you can convince a tribe or group to accept vaccine if they had been practicing herbal medicine all throughout their lives? Or how you can convince a community to take advantage of vaccines when their families have opted not to take them for the longest period of time? Although, I believe this is very rare, Gray’s concepts will help a person get acquainted with his/her patients by merely taking into account how men and women vary in reacting to various factors. Knowing that Gray focused on how to make relationships work, it becomes easier to apply his concepts to something general, such as human services – where people deal with other people. Gray’s concepts may even be applied or associated to a group, for Martians did belong to one culture and Venetians belong to another, and very likely, together they share or may have built a different culture too. With this in mind, relating to others will become an everyday adventure, rather than a routinary assumption and prediction of behaviors. It will constitute facts and bases on how personalities can be so similar, yet so different.

There’s an easy way to warm up any crowd, and that’s to have something in common with them. You want your first speaking engagementto be closely related to your book and your book’s message.If your book is all about the stressful life of a lawyer, then you’re not going to want to speak to a group of airline pilots.For your first speaking gig, your goal is to find an audience that will benefit from your book’s message. Ideally, you want to find an audience you naturally connect with, because that connection will make you more relaxed and authentic, which will result in a better speech.#4 Build ExcitementIf you’re not quite ready to beat the bushes in order to grab your first speaking engagementimmediately, then consider building up some excitement first.We authors share a common goal: to get our target readers excited about our book’s message!How do you do that? The good news is the Internet makes bui lding a virtual audience fairly easy these days with consistent effort. You can establish a following of readers through your website, through online forums, via social media, and by writing blog posts, both your own and by writing guest posts for others.Use all of these types of content to build your audience with the goals of increasing book sales and finding your first speaking gig.#5 Hone Your SkillsThink of informal ways to practice your speaking abilities with the goal of scoring a â€Å"real† gig.You can produce videos on your book’s subject, join podcasts, and seek out online interviews to share your voice with the world, gain exposure, and get comfortable with your talking points.By showcasing your speaking talents, you open the door to an invitation to speak in a more structured setting- that even pays more. Plus, you get great practice speaking about your book’s message before you have to stand on a stage in person.#6 Attend a Writer’s Worksh opA great way to get the inside scoop is to meet other authors and pick their brains about their speaking process.How did they find speaking engagements? What are their best speaking tips? What fees do they charge? Meeting other writers gives you a broader network to use as resources on all topics that impact authors- not just the nitty-gritty of drafting books.#7 Speak at an Industry EventThese fact-based speaking engagements areperfect for non-fiction authors. Whether your industry is blogging, healthcare, law, plumbing, or real estate, it’s likely you can find a conference about it.The exact nature of the industry doesn’t have to mirror the topic of your book. Instead, you can focus your talk on skills that can help people in that industry.For example, if your book is about productivity, you can create a talk that’s focused on how your audience can adapt the productivity lessons found in your book to suit their particular industry.#8 Aim Low (at First)The f irst of your speaking engagements probably won’t be a Ted Talk, and that’s okay!The first time, in fact, you may have to volunteer your time to speak at a pretty tiny event.
